The FURNITUREWORKS factory (what we do)
The FURNITUREWORKS factory is located on the beautiful Sussex coast, in the town of Worthing.
The factory is a hive of activity with some of Englands finest furniture-makers working on many diverse projects and making wonderful bespoke furniture. The work area is divided into various sections.
On one side is the frame and cabinet department where raw timber is milled and shaped into the finest frames, tables and cabinets. Furnitureworks has a grand collection of equipment, from classic wood-working machines to the latest CNC machining centre which gives incredible versatility and will even machine Perspex and aluminium. On the other side is the upholstery department. This area boasts a skill base made up of some of the best upholsterers around. They have the knowledge to produce a fine deep buttoned Chesterfield or a run of modern tub chairs for a boutique London hotel. At the front of the workshop is the polishing area where all kinds of polishing and painting techniques are used. We are just over an hour South of London please feel free to visit.

Environmental and quality issues
At FURNITUREWORKS England we believe that the material we use is our life and we use it with respect.
All timber used comes from managed forests with only reputable suppliers used. We try to minimize the use of old growth timber where possible. During 2008 we will give up using Mahogany totaly. Our 15,000sqft of floor area is heated entirely from the waste shavings and off cuts that were once thrown away. This is achieved through state of the art equipment that meets the requirements of the clean air act.
We use 95% water-based glues in the construction process. Our polishing shop uses water-based stains and AC high solid lacquers, minimizing solvent return to the atmosphere. Unlike many polishing shops we meet all current regulations. All staff are aware of quality issues and have the right to reject any component at any stage of construction, if they feel for any reason that the said item is not up to the required standard.
Frames
FURNITUREWORKS is famous for its frames. The factory has a fully operational frame shop within and some of the best frame makers in the country. There is not much that Furnitureworks do not know about frames. FURNITUREWORKS frame section can produce 1 classic wing chair or 300 tubs for a hotel, bespoke and versatile is the name of the game. Frame construction is usually Beech with screw and dowel joints. Some composite frames are also being produced from plywood and beech rails, very strong and light. 75% of all frames made are sold to other companies nation-wide and this part of the FURNITUREWORKS operation is the backbone of the company. Please read the section on our environmental views.
The following guide lines apply to all frame orders.
When ordering any of the standard models, shown on our website please give us the item name and size required. Dining chairs will automatically have no arms unless you specify any different.
If you are purchasing frame only please tell us if you have any specific requirements for the upholstery, in other words if you intend to fit a spring unit please tell us so we can put the rails in the correct place for you.
All frames are Beech as standard unless otherwise stated. If you require a different timber in the show wood areas please state on order.
All bespoke frame orders should contain as much information as possible. In an ideal world a proper frame drawing is best. However we have had drawings sent to us on the back of a cereal packet and we can usually interpret what you want. We will of course confirm our interpretation of your requirements in writing.
Once you have received your order it is imperative that you check the frame before upholstering it. We will not accept any liability for fabric, cushions etc if the frame turns out to be incorrect after you have started work on it.
Cabinet and table Making
FURNITUREWORKS Cabinet makers are incredibly versatile and are capable of making a simple bed-side cabinet or a complicated reception desk for a hotel. They also make the finest solid hardwood tables from timbers like Oak or Black Walnut. If you have any bespoke cabinet requirements just email or fax us your drawings and we will see what we can do.
As all FURNITUREWORKS Cabinet and table making is bespoke, the pictures shown on this site are for guidance only. Sizes styling and timbers are all entirely up to you. We also work with other materials like: Stainless Steel, Glass, Perspex, Slate and Marble.

Polishing
The FURNITUREWORKS polishing shop is a purpose built room which filters input air as well as output air, making sure that any dust from the workshop is not allowed to contaminate the items being polished. Furniture works use only water based stains and AC lacquers which meet current regulations. There are many sheen levels available as wells as block colour. This method gives a superb durable finish and is tough enough to handle the rigours of hotel or domestic life.
The following guide lines apply to all polishing orders.
We use industry standard polishing colours which are known by their descriptive names i.e. dark mahogany or light oak. However when these stains are applied to raw beech they may end up slightly different to the colour you are thinking of. We therefore recommend if a colour match is important you send us a sample or ask us for one.
Our standard method is water based stain followed by a seal coat of AC lacquer. We then hand rub back and apply a top coat of AC lacquer. Our top coat sheen level is 30% as standard, this gives a satin look. If you require a matt or a hi gloss please let us know as we can achieve this as well.
We can also offer special colour finishes (block Colour) these are specially mixed to your requirements and can be colour matched to any industries standard RAL number. There is an extra charge for this service as we can only mix a minimum of 5 litres.
Upholstery
The FURNITUREWORKS upholsterers are able to produce work to any quality required. While we love making the finest quality products to the highest standard, we understand the requirements of the modern hotel. In other words we can make a beautiful hand buttoned Chesterfield with coil springs and feather cushions or when required a run of cost sensitive tub chairs for a boutique hotel. Most of the work our upholsterers undertake is on a COM (customers own material) basis. However, we can supply leather and some contract fabrics if required.
The following guide lines apply to all upholstery orders.
When ordering an upholstered frame please make sure that you tell us exactly your upholstery requirements. In other words the application, cushion internals, piping, nailing etc. If you do not we may decide. All COM fabrics must meet the relevant fire regs for the intended use of the finished item. If COM fabrics do not meet the relevant fire regs, an interliner will be used at an extra cost. We automatically use the correct fire rated internals for the job in question.
All COM fabrics should be clearly marked as to which is the face side and in which direction the pattern should run. Also if you require a certain part of the pattern in a certain place this should be shown. If you do not do this, we will use our own discretion.
All COM fabrics must be clearly labelled with customers name and job reference. All COM fabrics must be with us at least 2 working weeks before quoted completion date or delays may happen.
